Bex – NYX

Friday, 4 january 2013

Michael Curran is a fantastic photographer. My little dog, NYX, is black and fast moving so it’s quite difficult to take nice pictures of her. Michael managed to capture, not only her intense cuteness, but also her spirit and joy! And I don’t look too bad in the pictures either His on-site, natural looking photos are so much cooler than a posed studio picture. Also, his demeanor, empathy, and knowledge of dog behaviour made my dog so comfortable (she worries a lot). Our photo shoot with Michael was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend him!

Gina – Chip

My adolescent dog, Chip, loves people, dogs, and especially rabbits and squirrels. This “love” caused him to become overstimulated very quickly and he stayed amped up… we like to say he gets “crazy eyes”. For example, he would see a rabbit and lose it… literally bark/scream like he was being murdered and nearly rip my arm off trying to chase it. For the remainder of the walk, he would be on high alert and something as little as a falling leaf would send him off again. Well, we knew we needed help and reached out to Michael for training sessions. We worked with keeping under his “threshold” for stimulation and giving me the ability to bring him back to a relaxed mood. Now, we are comfortable going around the block without any “crazy eyes”. While Chip and I still have to expand what we’ve learned to more situations, Michael gave us the tools to do so confidently. I would say my favorite part of working with Michael was how much love he gave my pup and the fact that his training encourages you to bond with your dog. It not only gave us more peace in our home, it gave me a newfound love of my sweet, goofy Chip and that is priceless.

If I had a dog who needed training or who had some behavior problems and I lived in the greater Denver area, I’d head to Michael Curran. It’s been my pleasure to know Michael as a fellow dog trainer and behaviorist for a few years now, and you just can’t go wrong with him. He really understands dogs at a deep level, and he uses humane methods that motivate dogs and that help build people’s relationships with their dogs. He has special skill in reaching shy and reactive dogs, even those that are extremely so. His photography is wonderful, too, as is his writing. Simply put, he is a very nice man who has great skill in reaching and teaching dogs and their people. He has earned my very highest recommendation! It has been my experience that Michael Curran is an excellent trainer with an outstanding knowledge and experience base. One can hire Michael with confidence and know their dog will be treated with the utmost respect as will the owner. Should Michael ever move closer to WI, Pawsitively Unleashed! LLC would be wanting him to join our team. Renea Dahms DipCBST, RMT, CTDI ~ Author “The Family Companion Dog-An Owner’s Manual to Relationship Centered Leadership.

After six dog trainers I started to give up hope for my Australian Kelpie mix, then I met Michael. I knew immediately just from his relaxed confident tone in his voice that he was different. Through Michael’s positive and extensive training techniques, patience, and a true sense of wanting to help my dog and myself improve , I can say without a doubt he did just that. I would highly recommend Michael to anyone who is considering a dog trainer.

Julie – Pisces

Michael is the best! His knowledge and passion has helped me learn and grow with my 16 month old pup, Pisces. Michael helped me understand and change my “old school” mindset and ideas such as Alpha Dog training. The work he does is so expert, and his deep understanding of the human/dog relationship is amazing. If all dog trainers had his knowledge base, patience, and passion, the world in general would be a much better place. He has guided me with a VERY HIGH ENERGY pup. I have always gotten my dogs as puppies, but Pisces is the most challenging, and with Mike’s help, both me and Pisces have and are continuing to benefit from what we have learned! He approaches the dog and owner with a keen, non judgmental sense of expertise and compassion. I trust his work, and he proves to really know what he’s talking about!

Colorado Mountain Mushers

On behalf of Colorado Mountain Mushers, I’d like to thank you for the wonderful pictures you took of our presentation at the Boulder County fair! You did a fantastic job of capturing the essence of our dogs and what we do with them. I especially appreciate the shots that you got of us scootering. I hadn’t yet been able to get a good picture of that, and yours are definitely “suitable for framing”!

Emily – Mowgli

Wednesday, 25 July 2012

When we adopted Mowgli, a three year old Catahoula mix, we knew he would require lots of training and love. However, the more he bonded with us, the more his anxiety grew. We realized we needed professional help to prevent angry neighbors and diffuse a potentially dangerous situation. Mike helped Mowgli (and us) gain confidence, increase self control, and learn coping strategies for challenging situations. He also provided great advice on choosing appropriate toys, food and behavior aids as well guidance for talking with our veterinarian. Today, Mowgli is a happy and healthy boy who minds his manners and loves meeting new people and dogs. He is still protective of his family and home, but we are able to manage the situation to keep him and visitors safe. We couldn’t have done it without Mike’s patience, expertise, and continuous support.

Joy – Nila

Saturday, 15 October 2011

I have permanent care of my mother’s miniature schnauzer puppy since my mother suffered a stroke when Nila was 9 weeks old. I started working with Michael when Nila was 10 months old. We have had a number of sessions together with a couple weeks break between each session. Nila used to “loose her mind” when she saw other dogs and kids, because she was SOOOO excited, wanting to play with all the dogs and kids as well as sacrificing herself so anyone could pet her. Since we started working with Mike, those behaviors have been reduced drastically! I have been repeatedly complimented on how well behaved she is since she was 12 months old. We are now teaching her more and more advanced tricks as well as continually improving her behavior with great success! Thank you Mike!

Tom – Boomer

Wednesday, 08 June 2011

Boomer is an overly energetic dog, that did not have an outlet for his energetic nature.  Because of my frustration which was tied to my expectations of Boomer.  Michael suggested we train Boomer.  Through relationship building exercises, which utilize Boomers eagerness to learn, Boomer is now softer on the leash.  I no longer use a harness which prevented Boomer from jumping.  We keep up on no jumping through exercises which, through continued use and the cooperation of everyone we come in contact with are definitely working.

Michael taught me to allow Boomer to present behaviors through clicker training which allow him to figure out what to do, rather than letting him be a robot through me commanding him or scolding him when I deemed something he did unsatisfactory.  Michael also taught Boomer how to use self control.  Boomer was on the verge of becoming neurotic.  We now spend lots of outside time together and interact with more situations, which are beneficial for Boomers mental stimulation and confidence.  Thank You Michael for starting Boomer and I on a great renewed path of friendship.

Bernie – Scruffy

Wednesday, 01 June 2011
Scruffy is a Wired Hair Terrier mix, his looks attracted a great deal of attention as did his crazy out of control behavior.  He was a happy dog and I was a frustrated dog owner.  My attempts to control his behavior and my love for Scruffy wasn’t enough to harness his behavior in a positive way.  People meeting Scruffy either in my home or out in public caused me to say a litany of apologizes for his actions.

When a friend from out of town came to visit and met Scruffy for the first time, I apologized for his uncontrollable exuberance and mentioned to my friend that Scruffy had attended obedience school.  My friend responded, “Just imagine if he didn’t go to those classes he would have been worse than he is now.”  Sad commentary on my dog’s behavior, but true.  That was before Michael Curran came into our lives.

During the training lessons with Michael Scruffy remained a happy dog and learned about making choices with his behavior. This approach created a contented and well behaved dog.  Michael’s training redefined Scruffy’s behavior without changing his joyful and playful character. Learning from Michael I now am developing the skills to channel Scruffy’s behavior in a positive way and have gained knowledge and confidence to sculpt Scuffys’ behavior in a calm and constructive manner.  Implementing the lessons learned from Michael’s dog training Scruffy will continue to develop into an amazing dog that I can enjoy as my companion.

Thank you Michael for lessons learned and for your continued efforts to care for our furry friends in your gentle and intelligent approach in dog training.
